HISTORY MOMENTS

The Idaho State Historical Society reports that during this week in history:

Albion Normal School was opened on January 8, 1894. It was closed permanently 57 years later as a cost cutting measure recommended by then-Governor Len B. Jordan;

Gov. John Hines became the first Governor to host an Inaugural Ball in the new Idaho Capitol Building on January 10, 1913. The event had been held during the previous eight years at the Natatorium on Warm Springs Avenue;

World War II flying ace Gregory "Pappy" Boyington died on January 11, 1988. Born in Coeur d'Alene in 1912, it was a flight with a barnstorming pilot at age eight that inspired his interest in flying airplanes; and

The first meeting of the House of Representatives of the State of Idaho convened on January 8, 1891. Frank A. Fenn of Idaho County was elected Speaker by a wide majority and quickly took the oath of office. After a round of hearty applause, the Idaho Daily Statesman reported that the Speaker "rapped sharply for order, and as he did so the head of his gavel flew off and sailed out into the body of the House, which caused a laugh."
