County Records on Microfilm

By Steve Barrett, Library Assistant, and Jim Schneider, Volunteer

The Idaho State Historical Society Library and Archives (L&A) holds microfilm copies of county records from around the state. Included are citizenship, civil and criminal court, land and property, wills and probate court, tax, and vital (birth, marriage, death) records. "County Records on Microfilm" is an index to those materials in our collection. Many of these records were originally microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah and may be available from your local LDS Family History Center, as well.

County-level records stored at the
Merle W. Wells Archives Building.

Please keep in mind, however, that microfilmed county records are not the only Idaho county records the L&A holds. We also have--in their original, hard-copy format--the originals of microfilmed county records and, more importantly, the originals of many, many more county records that have never been microfilmed anywhere and are available only through the L&A. When you've done an exhaustive search of microfilmed Idaho county records, you may wish to contact us to request a search of the original, hard-copy county records in our collection for word of your ancestor or research subject. To review our procedures for submitting a request for information, please click here.

To view the County Records on Microfilm index, click on the link below. ou must have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download) on your computer to open the file. If you do not have Acrobat and would like us to look up a name for you, or if you encounter any difficulties, click here to review our procedures for submitting a request for assistance. Be advised that the County Records on Microfilm index is intended for personal research purposes only and should not be copied or distributed to others in any format, including paper or electronic versions.

Finally, to complete your search of Idaho county records, you may wish to contact the County Clerk's, County Recorder's and/or County Assessor's office in the courthouses of the counties of origin for access to any records they may not have transported to the Library and Archives. The Idaho Association of Counties provides contact information for these county offices at http://idcounties.org/counties/index.htm
