Lucia Loraine Williams, July 28, 1851
"Came to the Hot Springs. There was a little stream or drain running across the road about one-half mile from the spring. It was such a beautiful water that several of our company alighted to drink but on a near approach they were satisfied with jerking their hands away. Some complained of burning their lips and those that were at first deceived tried in vain to deceive the others. Camped near. Visited the springs. There we found the water hot enough for cooking. The ground a few feet from the spring was covered with saleratus and those of the company who were short of the same replenished their storage."

"Got an early start. Drove to Boiling Springs [Givens Hot Springs], seven miles. These are two large and beautiful springs, the water looking cool and inviting with a sulphuric smell but it is so hot that a person can not hold their hand in it. Sufficiently hot to boil eggs... ."

Current Observations/Journal Entry:
"Givens Hot Springs, once a stop on the Oregon Trail, is now a stop on Hwy 78 for those waiting to enjoy the water of the natural hot springs. In the late 1800's, Milford and Martha Givens developed the springs which have been in the family ever since. Today, there is a commercial indoor swimming pool open to the public; this pool is surrounded by a campground and picnic area (fees collected). Archaeological digs by the Idaho State Historical Society have revealed prehistoric campsites in the same area. These date back 4,500 years!"
