When pulling together a piece such as this, one expects flukes or crisis of some sort. Driving back country roads that have had excessive rain one finds challenge in the mud and ruts.

Covering 988 miles, half the entire Oregon Trail distance, in three days with people you don't know makes for interesting group dynamics... Which is the polite way of saying people in a car for 12 hours a day can really get on one another's nerves! Actually the four of us got along famously but for a brief struggle over "climate control" in the car; the men wanted it much colder than the women.

Symbolically, I found it ironic that I had to retrace my steps in the development of this piece much as the emigrants may have had to face stumbling blocks during their quest. Photos that were missed or overlooked, other assignments that become more time sensitive, and a computer glitch that resulted in a loss of data entry representing two days worth of work. How many times did the emigrants face a swollen river, broken wagon wheels, or worse situations that set them back along their journey?

This project will be dynamic in nature because as new information comes to light or with the addition of suggested activities, the material will continue to evolve.

Happy Trails.
